Appalachian State Football commenced its 2026 season with a commanding 55-3 victory over Maine at Kidd Brewer Stadium on Saturday. In front of a sold-out crowd of 33,664, the Mountaineers delivered a dominant performance that saw them post the program's largest margin of victory since a 72-7 win against Gardner-Webb in 2018. This resounding start marks the beginning of head coach Dowell Loggains' second season, with a roster featuring 73 newcomers.
The Mountaineers’ offense was prolific, accumulating 647 yards of total offense and 34 first downs, compared to Maine's 250 yards and 12 first downs. App State’s 10 possessions resulted in nine straight scoring drives after an initial turnover-capped march to Maine's 5-yard line on the opening series. These scoring drives included seven touchdowns and two field goals by James London.
Quarterback Malachi Singleton led the offensive charge, completing 22 of 24 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns in less than three full quarters of play. The rushing attack was equally effective, tallying 299 yards at an average of 7.7 yards per carry. Treyaun Webb punched in a 2-yard touchdown midway through the first quarter, while Jaquari Lewis, Nate Branch, and Jackson Grier also contributed rushing touchdowns. Receivers Branch and Grier notably scored on runs of 36 and 28 yards, respectively.
Singleton’s three touchdown passes all came in the second quarter. He connected with Darrin Fugitt for one score, and Sam Pickett III hauled in two touchdown receptions covering 14 and 7 yards in the final five minutes of the first half. These scores helped App State build a substantial 31-0 halftime lead. London's field goals also added to the Mountaineers' tally, with one 32-yard kick closing out the scoring. Overall, App State finished with 348 passing yards from three quarterbacks. Henry Hasselbeck and Tommy Ulatowski combined for 29 completions in 33 attempts.
On the defensive side, App State was formidable, shutting out Maine (1-1) until the final minute of the third quarter. The defense limited Maine's offensive production and created crucial turnovers. Caleb Sandstrom recorded App State's first sack of the season. Later in the first half, edge rusher Caleb Pitts intercepted a pass he tipped to himself, setting up a touchdown drive that contributed to the 31-0 lead at halftime. Early in the third quarter, Colton Phares added another interception and also recorded a sack on an intentional-grounding penalty. The Mountaineers' defense accounted for eight tackles for loss throughout the game.
Maine's lone score came from a field goal in the final minute of the third quarter, breaking the shutout bid. However, App State continued its dominance with late rushing touchdowns from Branch and Grier, further extending their lead before London's final field goal.
The Mountaineers will travel to East Carolina next weekend for a noon game, which will be broadcast on ESPNU, aiming to continue their strong start to the season.
