App State's field hockey team (8-8 overall, 4-4 MAC) suffered a 2-1 defeat against James Madison University (8-6 overall, 8-1 MAC) in a tightly contested match that saw JMU extend its win streak to seven games. The Mountaineers battled back from an early deficit to tie the game at 1-1 by halftime, but JMU ultimately secured the winning goal in the fourth quarter.

The Mountaineers demonstrated an aggressive style of play from the outset, earning two penalty corners within the opening five minutes of the first quarter. However, JMU's defense successfully blocked both attempts before they could reach the goal. A few minutes later, JMU had a penalty corner opportunity of its own, but App State's fourth-year goalkeeper Dakota Anderson kicked aside a shot from first-year defender Ella Dunston, keeping the score deadlocked at 0-0 through the end of the first quarter.

App State threatened early in the second quarter, with a crossing pass entering JMU’s circle that was deflected just wide of fourth-year goalkeeper Lily Sweeney. JMU then earned its second penalty corner at the 20:01 mark following a foul against App State. This time, JMU capitalized, with first-year forward Emma Smit passing to fourth-year defender Azul Covarrubias, who scored from the top of the circle to give JMU a 1-0 lead. Covarrubias noted that this opening was a result of JMU coaches scouting App State’s penalty corner defense, stating, "It was so open." The Mountaineers responded quickly, winning a penalty corner about two minutes later, but JMU’s pressure prevented a shot.

Despite JMU's defensive efforts, App State found the equalizer with less than five minutes remaining in the second period. Fourth-year App State midfielder Sophia Baxter threaded a pass to fellow fourth-year midfielder Kassie Paul at the top of the circle, who then blasted a shot over Sweeney’s outstretched arm, tying the game at 1-1. The score remained even as the teams headed into halftime.

JMU started the third quarter with renewed energy, with third-year forward Avery Ruckman nearly breaking the tie just 26 seconds in, but Anderson made the save. App State immediately counterattacked, and less than a minute later, appeared to take the lead when a shot from graduate defender Sarah Callery deflected off Sweeney and into the net. However, officials overturned the goal after a review, keeping the game tied at 1-1. App State’s pressure led to several JMU turnovers, and the Mountaineers earned two more penalty corners during the remaining 10 minutes of the third quarter, both of which were turned away by JMU’s defense without allowing a shot on goal.

The go-ahead goal for JMU came just over three minutes into the fourth quarter. After assisting Covarrubias on JMU’s first goal, Smit received a shot from Covarrubias towards the left post and redirected it for what would become the game-winning goal. With just over four minutes left in the match, App State was given an opportunity to tie the game when JMU first-year forward Diede Donders received a green card, forcing the Dukes to play with 10 players against App State’s 11 for two crucial minutes. However, JMU’s defense successfully held on during this period, securing the 2-1 victory.

JMU head coach Alyssa Parker-Rosenblum reflected on the hard-fought win, stating that there are games where she is proud of tactical execution, but then "games like this where you’re really proud of because of the heart, the fight, the desire and the grittiness." The result extended JMU’s winning streak and marked a significant performance for Covarrubias in her last home game, scoring a goal and assisting another.
