HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Appalachian State Football will travel to face Marshall on Nov. 14 for a 6 p.m. kickoff at Joan C. Edwards Stadium, as Marshall University Athletics reported on Monday. The evening game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ following an announcement made under the Sun Belt Conference and ESPN television contract during its standard 12-day selection window.

The upcoming meeting carries deep historical significance for the host program and its surrounding community. The November 14 date marks Marshall Football’s annual '75' game, falling on the 56th anniversary of the Marshall Plane Crash. That tragic event occurred on Nov. 14, 1970, claiming the lives of all 75 individuals on board Southern Airways Flight 932 as the aircraft attempted re-entry to Tri-State Airport following a game at East Carolina.

Commemorative events in Huntington are scheduled to begin early on the morning of the game. The annual Marshall Memorial Fountain Ceremony will commence at 10 a.m. at the Marshall Memorial Student Center Fountain, marking the start of a full day dedicated to remembrance for the football program, the university, and the local community.

On the field, the matchup resumes a rivalry between Appalachian State and Marshall that spans nearly 50 years. The two institutions played each other every season as Southern Conference rivals from 1977 through 1996, a unbroken 20-year stretch that ended when Marshall transitioned to Division I-A, now known as the Football Bowl Subdivision.

After their regular conference series ended in the 1990s, the programs met again in a single game in 2002. They later resumed regular play over the last six consecutive seasons. That recent stretch included a two-year home-and-home arrangement in 2020 and 2021, which was immediately followed by four straight seasons of competition as members of the Sun Belt Conference.

In the overall all-time series history, Appalachian State holds a 17-11 lead over Marshall. However, the Mountaineers have struggled on the road against the Thundering Herd in recent decades, having not secured a victory in Huntington since Marshall moved up to the FBS level. Over that span, Marshall has earned consecutive victories against Appalachian State in their last four matchups hosted at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
