Blue Ridge Energy staff are prepared and ready to respond to potential power outages this weekend, as heavy rainfall and high winds are expected to impact the area from Saturday through Sunday. The cooperative has completed preparations and will continue monitoring conditions throughout the weekend. Members are encouraged to stay tuned to the cooperative’s website and social media channels for updates if conditions warrant.

Blue Ridge Energy reminds its approximately 80,000 members across its service area to prioritize safety, especially regarding downed power lines. Members are urged to stay far away from any downed lines and to avoid touching a downed line or any object in contact with it. The cooperative emphasizes the danger, stating that these lines “may still be energized,” which can be hazardous or even deadly. Downed power lines should be reported immediately to the cooperative by calling 1-800-451-5474. Additionally, members are advised to call 911 to report a downed line. Only a trained line technician is qualified to handle downed power lines safely.

The cooperative also encourages members to prepare for potential outages by having specific items on hand to ensure safety and comfort. Before a storm arrives, essential items include a flashlight and fresh batteries, a battery-powered radio for news and updates, non-perishable food items, and bottled water for sustenance. A manual can opener is also recommended for canned goods. Members should also ensure that any necessary medications are readily accessible. It is crucial to have mobile phones fully charged and to have alternative charging methods available, such as power banks. For warmth, blankets or sleeping bags should be on hand, along with a well-stocked first-aid kit for minor injuries.

Blue Ridge Energy provides multiple channels for members to access information during an outage. A live outage map is available on the cooperative’s website and through the Blue Ridge Energy mobile app, allowing members to view current outage situations. In the event of major outages, the cooperative shares restoration updates on its social media channels. However, the cooperative specifies that outages cannot be reported via social media platforms. For an outage to be entered into the cooperative’s outage management system, it must be submitted through the official reporting channels, primarily by calling the cooperative directly.

Blue Ridge Energy serves approximately 80,000 members across Caldwell, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany, and parts of Wilkes, Avery, and Alexander counties. The cooperative's propane and fuels subsidiary extends its services to customers throughout this service area and into Burke, Catawba, and Grayson County, Virginia.
