A series of events spanning arts, wellness, academics, and sports are scheduled across Appalachian State University and Downtown Boone from Sept. 7-12. These activities offer a diverse range of opportunities for students, year-round residents, and visitors to engage with the local community and university life.

The Hayes School of Music will present a rendition of Igor Stravinsky’s “The Soldier’s Tale,” also known by its French title, “L’Histoire du Soldat.” This performance, which combines instrumentation and spoken word, tells a story about a soldier’s Faustian deal with the devil. Members of the Hayes School of Music will perform the piece at Rosen Concert Hall from 8-9 p.m. Fortunately for attendees, no such deal is required, as the performance is free to attend and open to the public. Expanding on academic and cultural enrichment, Belk Library and Information Commons, in partnership with the Reich College of Education, will host an interactive workshop. Titled "Beyond Our Borders: Exploring Global Youth Literature," this event focuses on children’s and young adult literature from around the world. It is open to all and will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. in Room 024 on the lower level of Belk Library.

For student wellness and productivity, two distinct events are planned on the Appalachian State campus. Wellness & Prevention Services invites students to the Sanford Mall fire pit from 6-7:30 p.m. for free s’mores and an open conversation regarding college wellness. This event is presented as a relaxed environment designed to help first-year and returning students learn about various on-campus resources and programs available to them. Additionally, the Mountaineer Recovery Community (MRC) will provide an opportunity for a mid-week productivity boost. The MRC Lounge, a cozy place located in Wellness and Prevention within the Miles Anna Student Building, will offer coffee, tea, and cookies from 2-4 p.m., allowing students to catch up on work.

Sports enthusiasts can catch collegiate volleyball action at the Holmes Convocation Center. Appalachian State Volleyball will compete in day one of the women’s volleyball Mountaineer Classic against William & Mary. This match is scheduled from 3-5 p.m. The tournament will continue with consecutive games on Sept. 12 and Sept. 13, featuring matches against North Florida and Western Carolina, respectively. Admission to all games in the Mountaineer Classic is free to attend, welcoming the public to support the Mountaineer team.

Beyond the university campus, Downtown Boone will become a stage for local artistic talent with the Buskers Fest. Organized by the Watauga Arts Council, this event aims to highlight the community’s diverse artistic culture. From 1-5 p.m., the streets of Downtown Boone will feature a variety of artistic expressions, including music, artwork, performances, and more, offering a vibrant showcase for local artists.

These events collectively offer a week of engagement and opportunity, fostering community connection, cultural appreciation, and support for student life within Boone and Watauga County.
