RALEIGH – Zachary “Zack” Benfield, a native of Caldwell County, was sworn in today as the newest member of the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) governing board. The ceremony took place during a commission meeting at the agency’s headquarters in Raleigh. Benfield’s appointment fills an unexpired term previously held by Commissioner John Stone and will extend through June 30, 2027. Speaker of the House Destin Hall made the appointment, bringing Benfield’s experience and passion for North Carolina’s natural landscapes to the state’s wildlife management authority.

Benfield's deep roots in the region began with his birth and upbringing in Caldwell County. His personal connection to the outdoors is extensive, characterized by his status as an avid hunter and angler. He frequently explores the diverse natural landscapes of North Carolina, often accompanied by his wife, Sarah, and their son and daughter, sharing his appreciation for the state’s natural heritage with his family. This lifelong engagement with wildlife and natural spaces provides a foundational perspective for his new role on the commission.

Professionally, Benfield is a graduate of Caldwell Community College, where he developed a solid educational background. Further specializing his expertise, he obtained an arborist certification with a focus on utility systems. This specific professional pathway underscores his practical understanding of natural resource management and infrastructure, skills that can be valuable in guiding policies related to wildlife habitats and public access. His career, like his personal life, has been shaped by a connection to both the outdoors and his local community.

Reflecting on his new position, Benfield emphasized his long-standing commitment to the environment and his community. He stated that he has oriented his life and career around the outdoors and the community he calls home. This sentiment highlights a dedication that extends beyond professional obligation. Benfield articulated a clear passion for fostering a connection to nature among younger generations, expressing a desire to see them engage with the outdoors. Furthermore, he affirmed he is "committed to supporting healthy, thriving wildlife populations" for the long term, ensuring their continued presence and vitality for future enjoyment.

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, as established by its statutory authority, plays a crucial role in the management of the state's natural resources. Its governing board, on which Benfield now serves, is responsible for establishing comprehensive policies and regulations. These policies are broad in scope, governing a wide array of outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing, and boating throughout North Carolina. The commission's work directly impacts how residents and visitors interact with the state's wildlife and waterways, making the decisions of its board members significant for conservation and recreational access. Benfield’s appointment adds a voice with local roots and a strong personal history with the state's outdoor traditions to this important body.
