App State women’s volleyball Head Coach Chad Sutton enters his second year leading the team as the 2026 season begins. With the addition of 10 new faces to the roster and two new coaches, Sutton's leadership and extensive experience will be crucial in navigating the season's challenges and determining the Mountaineers' trajectory in the Sun Belt Conference.
Sutton's journey to App State is marked by a consistent drive for success, evident across his varied coaching roles. Though specializing in volleyball, he grew up in Manatee County, Florida, where he played numerous sports including baseball, football, tennis, basketball, and volleyball. He continued his passion for sports as a strength and conditioning trainer during college before transitioning into coaching.
His early career as a head coach at Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School in Florida highlighted his foundational coaching philosophy. Faced with uncertainty and a team where many players had quit, Sutton instilled a culture of hard work, connectivity, and chemistry. This approach quickly bore fruit, leading the Cougars to the state championship in his third year. Despite a narrow 3-2 loss in the final set, Sutton's resolve was clear. After the game, when asked how long it would take to recover from the loss, he famously declared, “In one year. We’ll be back here next year.” He kept his promise, guiding the Cougars back to the championship game the following year, where they made history by winning the school's first state title in 50 years across any sport.
The transition to collegiate coaching brought new experiences. Sutton volunteered as an assistant coach at Purdue University for the 2020 and 2021 seasons, then served as an assistant coach for Coastal Carolina University in 2022. His first collegiate head coaching position came at Mercer University in 2023, where he remained for two years.
Sutton’s tenure at Mercer further showcased his impact on a program. During the 2024 season, he led the Bears to a program-best record of 26-7. In just his second season there, six players under his guidance received all-conference awards. His overall career record as head coach at Mercer stood at 42-19 over two seasons. Sutton consistently emphasized the importance of his mentality in guiding athletes to reach their full potential, stating the need to always maintain high standards while providing unwavering support.
Now, as the 2026 season kicks off for App State, Sutton's ability to integrate new talent and coaching staff will be tested. Rather than viewing the significant turnover as a hurdle, Sutton sees this new wave of players as a source of hope and an opportunity for a fresh start. He describes his ongoing role as being "constantly being out in front," whether that means pulling players forward or pushing them, always acting as a consistent, personal guide throughout their longer journey. From his beginnings as a middle school coach to his current collegiate role, Sutton's winning mentality and commitment to player development remain a constant, transcending teams of all ages and levels.
