FEMA has announced an award of more Pre Than $101 million to North Carolina, earmarking funds for 52 projects intended to accelerate disaster recovery and build resilience within communities across the state. The announcement, originating from Atlanta, details federal support aimed at helping North Carolina rebuild from past events and fortify against future ones, reflecting an ongoing commitment to community safety and stability.
A substantial portion of this funding, totaling more than $100 million, is being distributed through FEMA’s Public Assistance program. This program is designed to provide federal reimbursement to communities in the aftermath of a disaster. The eligible expenses under this program include critical activities such as debris removal, which is essential for clearing affected areas and restoring accessibility. It also covers emergency protective measures, which are actions taken to reduce or eliminate the immediate threat of damage or harm caused by a disaster. Furthermore, Public Assistance grants are allocated for the vital work of repairing or rebuilding damaged critical infrastructure, ensuring that necessary public services and facilities can be restored and made more resilient for the future. These projects directly address the physical aftermath of disasters, helping communities return to normal operations and rebuild stronger.
In addition to recovery efforts, FEMA is also dedicating more than $1 million to the state through its Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. This program focuses on proactive measures designed to prevent, eliminate, or significantly reduce future disaster-related damage. Through this funding mechanism, state, local, or territory governments and Tribal Nations are empowered to undertake a range of strategic mitigation initiatives. These can include the acquisition of homes and businesses located in areas frequently exposed to hazards, thereby removing populations from harm's way. The program also supports the crucial adoption and enforcement of stringent building codes and standards, which are fundamental to constructing safer, more resilient structures. Other supported projects involve protecting against floods through various engineering solutions like elevations and drainage improvement projects. Building safe rooms to protect occupants during severe weather events and upgrading essential utilities and infrastructure are also key components of this forward-looking program. This preventative approach aims to reduce the long-term risks and costs associated with natural disasters.
The funding for North Carolina is part of a larger federal commitment, with FEMA announcing more than $896 million for over 620 projects nationwide. This allocation underscores the ongoing national effort to support state and local communities as they work to rebuild from recent natural disasters. The announcement also cited President Donald J. Trump, stating that he is keeping his promise to reform federal disaster support and to ensure that taxpayer money is expended exclusively on projects and programs that deliver safety and security to the American people. This latest round of funding exemplifies the continuous provision of disaster recovery assistance from FEMA, contributing to the resilience of communities nationwide.
