The information, updated on September 28, 2026, indicates that no weather records were tied or broken during the month. The reporting provides a snapshot of the month's climate across the High Country landmark.
Temperatures recorded last month largely mirrored long-term averages for the mountain. The average high temperature for August 2026 was 67.44 degrees Fahrenheit, with an average low of 59 degrees, resulting in a monthly mean of 63.22 degrees. Comparing these to the 70-year averages for August at Grandfather Mountain, which include an average high of 68.3 degrees, an average low of 56.2 degrees, and a mean of 62.3 degrees, reveals a slightly cooler average high and a warmer average low in 2026, contributing to a slightly elevated overall mean.
The highest temperature recorded in August 2026 was 75.4 degrees on the 16th. This was considerably below the standing August record of 83 degrees, observed on August 22, 1983. The highest temperature ever recorded at Grandfather Mountain since it became a weather reporting station 70 years ago was 83.2 degrees on July 1, 2012.
Conversely, the coldest temperatures last month were observed on August 23 and 24, both reaching 54 degrees. This contrasts with the lowest temperature ever recorded on Grandfather Mountain in August, which was 36 degrees on August 29, 1986.
