A woman from Griggsville, Illinois, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with a fatal collision that occurred in July. Authorities allege the crash was intentional, leading to the death of a 73-year-old passenger and injuries to others.

Pike County Sheriff David Greenwood reported that deputies responded to the scene of a head-on collision on July 24 at approximately 7:54 p.m. The incident took place on U.S. 54, near the top of Atlas Hill. The crash involved a passenger car and a semitruck that was pulling a trailer.

According to Sheriff Greenwood, three individuals occupying the passenger vehicle sustained injuries in the violent impact. All three were transported to a hospital for medical attention following the collision. Among those injured was 73-year-old Cherie Wells of Pittsfield. Tragically, Ms. Wells later succumbed to her injuries, dying in St. Louis County, Missouri.

Throughout the subsequent investigation, deputies assigned to the case gathered evidence suggesting the driver of the passenger vehicle, identified as Jaime Rhode of Griggsville, deliberately caused the collision. Sheriff Greenwood stated that investigators determined Ms. Rhode "purposely steered in front of the oncoming semi" with the explicit intent to cause harm. This alleged action was reportedly undertaken with the intention to kill all occupants present in her vehicle at the time of the crash.

The findings of the investigation led to the issuance of an arrest warrant. This warrant was formally signed on Friday of last week, authorizing the charges against Ms. Rhode. She faces serious accusations, including two distinct counts of first-degree murder, reflecting the alleged intent and fatal outcome of the incident. Additionally, Ms. Rhode has been charged with one count of attempted first-degree murder, indicating the alleged intent to cause death to other individuals in the vehicle who survived the initial impact.

Jaime Rhode was subsequently arrested on Tuesday of this week. Following her arrest, she was processed and booked into the Pike County Jail, where she remains in custody. The ongoing legal process will address the charges stemming from the July collision and the allegations of intentional conduct that led to the death of Cherie Wells and the injuries of others.

The community in Pike County and surrounding areas is grappling with the details emerging from this incident, which has led to grave charges against the alleged perpetrator. The investigative work conducted by deputies aimed to understand the full circumstances of the deadly July 24 crash, which has now culminated in murder and attempted murder charges. The tragic death of Cherie Wells underscores the severity of the alleged actions and the legal proceedings that are now underway. The incident, which started as a response to a collision, evolved into a complex criminal investigation once the intentional nature of the crash was determined by law enforcement officials.
