High Country gas prices have seen a notable increase, with regular unleaded in the Boone area now at a low of $3.86 per gallon as of Tuesday morning. This represents a 17-cent jump from the $3.69 low reported on July 29. Across North Carolina, the average price for regular gasoline stands at approximately $3.85 per gallon, according to AAA Carolinas. This state average is about a dollar higher than prices observed at this time last year, placing an increased financial burden on local motorists. The upward trend is largely attributed to the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran, which has sustained volatility in oil markets and uncertainty in supply.
Several stations in the Boone area currently offer regular unleaded gasoline at the local low of $3.86 per gallon. These include the Sheetz on Chestnut Drive, Speedway on NC-105 South, Circle K on Blowing Rock Road, another Speedway on Blowing Rock Road, Harris Teeter on Blowing Rock Road, and the Speedway on Old East King Street. Slightly higher prices are also reported nearby, with BP and Exxon on Blowing Rock Road listing regular unleaded at $3.87 per gallon. The Circle K on West King Street is priced at $3.88, and Quality Plus in Blowing Rock is at $3.89 per gallon. This range reflects the current pricing landscape across different fuel retailers in the High Country.
The local price increases align with broader trends. The North Carolina average of $3.85 per gallon, as noted by AAA Carolinas, highlights a significant year-over-year rise, impacting budgets for residents and businesses statewide. Nationally, the average price for regular gasoline is $4.151 per gallon, according to AAA. This national average has consistently remained above $4 per gallon since mid-July, indicating a prolonged period of elevated fuel costs across the country. The High Country, therefore, is experiencing a localized reflection of these wider economic and geopolitical pressures.
Diesel prices in the High Country have also experienced a sharp rise alongside gasoline. The lowest price for diesel in Watauga County is $5.79 per gallon, found at Sheetz on Chestnut Drive and Quality Plus in Blowing Rock. A majority of Boone-area stations are listing diesel at $5.89 per gallon, including BP, various Speedway locations, Harris Teeter, and Quality Plus on US-421 North. Further afield, a CITGO station on US-421 North in Zionville is selling diesel at $5.98 per gallon. These elevated diesel costs impact commercial transport and operations reliant on diesel fuel, contributing to broader economic pressures.
The persistent upward movement in both gasoline and diesel prices is primarily attributed to the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran. This geopolitical situation has introduced significant volatility into global oil markets, leading to uncertainty regarding supply. Such instability often translates directly to higher prices at the pump as the cost of crude oil, a primary input for refined fuels, increases in response to perceived risks and reduced availability. The market's reaction to this conflict underscores the interconnectedness of international events and local consumer costs.
