Crews representing nine distinct agencies collaborated actively on Saturday afternoon to undertake the rescue of an injured hiker on the Lost Cove Trail in Avery County. This complex operation involved the significant task of extracting the patient from the remote and rugged trail environment, a process that demanded crews to navigate difficult terrain and execute multiple river crossings before reaching a waiting ambulance.
The emergency began shortly after 2 p.m. when Avery County 911 Communications dispatched an alert to the Linville-Central Rescue Squad, reporting that a hiker had sustained injuries while on the Lost Cove Trail. This initial notification triggered a widespread, coordinated response involving various emergency and support services from across the High Country region.
The comprehensive roster of responding organizations included the Linville-Central Rescue Squad, which played a central role in the coordination. They were joined by personnel from EMS Avery, responsible for critical on-scene medical care, and several volunteer fire departments vital to rural rescue operations: the Linville Volunteer Fire Department, Banner Elk Volunteer Fire & Rescue, and the Crossnore Volunteer Fire Department.
Further specialized assistance was provided by NC Mountain Rescue Team 1, a unit often called upon for challenging wilderness extrications, and the Avery County Drone team, which can offer aerial support and reconnaissance in hard-to-reach areas. Additional crucial support came from Avery County Emergency Management, Collettsville Fire & Rescue, and the Caldwell County Sheriff's Office, underscoring the inter-county and multi-faceted nature of the response.
Upon reaching the hiker's location on the trail, initial medical treatment was promptly administered by the responding crews. This immediate care was crucial for stabilizing the injured individual in the field. Once the patient’s condition was assessed and initial treatments applied, the hiker was carefully prepared for transport. This involved securing the individual within a stokes basket, a specialized piece of equipment designed to safely package and move patients through challenging or confined spaces.
The subsequent phase of the rescue — the carry-out — proved to be a physically demanding endeavor for all involved. The Lost Cove Trail is known for its rugged terrain, and responders had to meticulously navigate these challenging conditions. A significant logistical obstacle that rescue teams faced was the necessity to cross the river more than once along their route. Each river crossing required careful planning and execution to ensure the safety of both the patient and the rescue personnel, adding considerable time and effort to the extraction process.
Despite the inherent difficulties presented by the remote location and the rugged landscape, the collaborative efforts of the nine agencies ultimately led to the successful extrication of the injured hiker. The patient was safely brought out from the trail and transferred to a waiting ambulance, where they could receive further medical attention. The effective coordination and tireless work of these emergency service providers ensured a positive outcome in a potentially critical situation on the Lost Cove Trail.
