Appalachian State University’s Center for Judaic, Holocaust, and Peace Studies will host a public program on Monday, Nov. 9, from 6:30–7:30 p.m. in the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts 1102, marking the 88th anniversary of Kristallnacht, also known as the “Night of Broken Glass.” The 1938 attacks — carried out across Germany and coordinated by the Nazi regime — marked a significant escalation in state‑sponsored violence against Jewish communities.
During the program, App State faculty — including Dr. Michael Behrent (History), Dr. Christoph Schmitz (German Studies), and Dr. Darci Gardner (Judaic, Holocaust, and Peace Studies) — will offer lightning talks providing historical context, creating space for reflection on the events of 1938 and their lasting impact.
The event is free and open to the public. It will be offered both in-person and via Zoom. Register for the Zoom
Participants are invited to remain after the program for the lighting of a memorial candle, a moment of collective remembrance honoring the victims and survivors of Kristallnacht. After the talks and candle lighting, attendees are invited to join in a four-minute walk to the Center for Judaic, Holocaust, and Peace Studies, where there will be a light reception and a ceremony to mount a mezuzah donated by local Holocaust survivor Michael Berkowicz. The artifact is an exact replica of the one in the POLIN Museum, located on the site of the former Warsaw Ghetto.
Attendees may park in the College Street Parking Deck (next to the Belk Library and Information Commons) free of charge beginning at 5 p.m.
Questions may be directed to Center Director Dr. Darci Gardner at [email protected] or 828‑262‑2928
