What can cultural data tell us about how people live, communicate, learn, and interact around the world? And what happens when we compare those data with our own experiences? In this interactive session, we’ll explore the Hofstede Cultural Dimensions Database and its country comparison tool, a framework for examining cultural patterns across six dimensions. Drawing on a visit to Kenya, we’ll begin by exploring Kenya’s cultural data and reflecting on how the scores connect with or challenge our impressions and experiences of the country, including social interactions. From there, participants will use the comparison tool to explore countries of their choice, looking at similarities and differences and considering how cultural values and expectations might shape communication, teaching, learning, and collaboration across cultures. Whether you're a student, professor, or just plain curious about the world, you'll leave with a new tool for exploring cultural differences, questions to carry into future experiences, and a reminder that data can open the door to understanding.
