Least of These Carolinas, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting children in foster and kinship care, has established a second hub location in Wilkes County. This expansion broadens the Gastonia-based organization's capacity to deliver essential programs and services, now reaching communities in Wilkes, Caldwell, Watauga, Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, and Avery counties. The new hub aims to provide critical support to vulnerable youth across the High Country and surrounding areas.
The organization's mission centers on positively impacting children experiencing foster and kinship care. Executive Director Susanna Kavanaugh highlighted the scope of their work, stating that Least of These Carolinas is "working toward solving one of the largest problems in the nation – children lingering in the foster care system who aren't well supported." Through a variety of programs and events, the nonprofit strives to offer empowering opportunities and resources. These initiatives are designed to help children with unmet needs gain dignity and self-worth, ensuring they feel loved and supported within their communities.
To introduce its efforts and integration plans to the regional community, Least of These Carolinas is hosting an informational luncheon. The event is scheduled for Oct. 8, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at The Chapel at YMCA Camp Harrison in Boomer. Attendees who register for the luncheon will receive a meal and have the opportunity to learn more about the specific offerings of Least of These Carolinas. The session will cover how the organization plans to serve the region and how local community members can actively participate in its mission.
Community involvement is central to the nonprofit's operational model. Least of These Carolinas offers multiple avenues for individuals and groups to contribute. Volunteer opportunities include assisting with program events, engaging in community outreach initiatives, and performing daily in-office tasks at the new hub. Financial contributions are also welcomed, with options such as becoming a Wilkes Hub Founding Partner or donating to the Frontline fund, which directly supports children in foster care. Furthermore, churches, businesses, and other organizations are encouraged to partner with Least of These Carolinas to rally collective support for vulnerable youth within the communities served by the new hub.
Least of These Carolinas was co-founded in 2013 by Susanna Kavanaugh and Michelle Buchanan. Since its inception, the organization has developed eight intentional, child-first programs specifically designed for youth experiencing foster and kinship care. These programs operate in close collaboration with active Department of Social Services (DSS) caseworkers, ensuring coordinated and effective support. The new Wilkes County hub complements the nonprofit's established Gaston County regional hub, which currently serves Gaston, Mecklenburg, Cleveland, Lincoln, Burke, Rutherford, McDowell, and Catawba counties. This expansion signifies a significant step in the organization's ongoing commitment to children throughout the Carolinas.
