The High Country is bracing for its busiest traffic weekend of the year, scheduled for October 17-18, 2026. A significant influx of motorists is anticipated as the region hosts the Valle Country Fair in Valle Crucis and the 49th annual Woolly Worm Festival in Banner Elk, coinciding with what is generally considered peak leaf-viewing season. Roads across the High Country, particularly those leading to these festival locations, are expected to be significantly congested throughout the weekend.

Local roads are predicted to be "jam-packed" with the largest influx of motorists for the year on Saturday, October 17. While both festivals contribute to the expected congestion, Saturday is specifically noted as the busier day for traffic. Residents and visitors are advised to plan their travel accordingly, leaving for destinations much earlier than usual and allowing plenty of time to navigate the area’s two-lane roads, especially those leading into Valle Crucis and Banner Elk.

The Valle Country Fair is a single-day event taking place on Saturday, October 17, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fairgrounds are located along N.C. 194 near Valle Crucis. Admission to the fair is free, but parking is charged per vehicle. The parking fees are set at $10 for cars, $25 for small buses or vans, and $50 for large buses or motor coaches. Pets are not permitted at the Valle Country Fair.

Meanwhile, the Woolly Worm Festival, marking its 49th year, is a two-day event. It will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 18. The festival is held at the Historic Banner Elk Elementary School, located at 185 Azalea Circle. Woolly worm races are scheduled to begin around 10 a.m. both days.

For the Woolly Worm Festival, parking is available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis. Additionally, overflow parking options may be available for a fee, which is charged by non-profit organizations. The festival also provides a remote parking and shuttle service in conjunction with Lees-McRae College. Regarding admission, information from the festival’s website indicates a cost of $10 for adults and $5 for children aged 6-12, with children aged 5 and under admitted free. Tickets for the Woolly Worm Festival are sold online through its website. Similar to the Valle Country Fair, pets are not allowed at the Woolly Worm Festival, with the specific exception of woolly worms participating in the races.

The combination of these popular annual events and the natural draw of autumn foliage means that motorists should prepare for significant delays. Planning travel routes and departure times strategically will be crucial for navigating the High Country effectively during this peak period of visitor activity.
