App State defeated Coastal Carolina 35-32 on Friday night in Conway, S.C., staging a significant second-half comeback after facing a double-digit deficit at halftime. The Mountaineers, now 4-2 overall and 1-1 in Sun Belt play, scored the first 21 points of the second half to establish their own double-figure advantage before securing the road victory. The win marked the end of a four-game losing streak against Coastal Carolina in the series and a three-game skid at Brooks Stadium.

Running back Jaquari Lewis was a central figure in App State's offensive success, slicing through the offensive line's big holes to score four rushing touchdowns. He gained 85 yards on 13 carries, contributing to the Mountaineers' team total of 253 rushing yards. Lewis's performance made him the third App State back to achieve four rushing touchdowns in a single game during the program’s FBS era. The Mountaineer offense also benefited from a split-time effort at quarterback between Malachi Singleton and Henry Hasselbeck.

Malachi Singleton, a game-time decision due to an injury from the previous game, completed 12 of his 14 passes for 151 yards. Henry Hasselbeck took over for the entire second half, rushing for 125 yards on 21 carries. This marks the second-most rushing yards by an App State quarterback in the FBS era, placing Hasselbeck among a select group of Mountaineer quarterbacks to rush for at least 100 yards in a Sun Belt game. Hasselbeck also completed 9 of 12 throws for 112 yards and recorded his first career touchdown pass, a 31-yard connection to Sam Pickett III, which extended App State's lead to 35-24 with 6:41 remaining.

The Mountaineers found themselves trailing 24-14 at halftime. A key moment in their comeback occurred when safety Devin Henderson intercepted a pass in App State territory, directly setting up the go-ahead drive that culminated in Lewis’s fourth touchdown of the night. Coastal Carolina, now 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the Sun Belt, managed to cut App State's 11-point lead with a touchdown and two-point conversion with 3:11 left, but the Mountaineers effectively ran out the clock. A seven-play series, beginning with an 11-yard run by Hasselbeck and a 16-yard run by Lewis, allowed App State to kneel out the clock after Lewis gained 2 yards on a crucial third-and-1 carry from the Coastal 39 with 1:48 remaining.

The second half saw App State dominate, reversing the fortunes from a difficult close to the first half. After the teams traded three-and-out punts in the third quarter, Hasselbeck directed a nine-play, 75-yard touchdown drive that featured six runs for 46 yards, ending with a 12-yard touchdown from Lewis. Henderson's interception then paved the way for a 10-play, 58-yard touchdown drive to seize the lead, which included four runs from Hasselbeck, three runs from J’Marion Burnette (making his season debut), and a 3-yard touchdown run from Lewis.

Early in the fourth quarter, backfield pressure from Caleb Sandstrom and Ja’Den McBurrows forced a quick punt. Jaxson Dunn’s 63-yard punt, downed by Ammo Robinson at the 1-yard line, significantly flipped the field position. Though Coastal gained two first downs, they were forced to punt from their own 27. Hasselbeck then initiated a four-play, 69-yard touchdown drive with a 17-yard completion to Pickett. Runs of 9 yards from Lewis and 12 yards from Hasselbeck set up the decisive 31-yard touchdown pass from Hasselbeck to Pickett.

The first half contrasted sharply with App State's second-half performance. Coastal Carolina began strongly, scoring on a five-play, 60-yard touchdown drive in less than two minutes. Lewis responded with consecutive touchdowns, capping drives of 72 and 88 yards. His first score was a 12-yard run. On the next series, Singleton connected with Nate Branch for a 45-yard gain to the Coastal 7-yard line, leading to Hasselbeck’s 6-yard keeper that set up another Lewis touchdown. However, Coastal's Deuce Bailey threw a 71-yard touchdown pass to Robby Washington, and after App State missed a 40-yard field goal, Coastal regained the lead with a 13-play, 78-yard touchdown drive ending with Bailey's 8-yard pass to Ben Verges.

The first half concluded poorly for App State. The Mountaineers had moved into position to potentially erase a 21-14 deficit when Singleton completed a 29-yard pass to Jamel Howse to the 1-yard line. However, a 15-yard penalty for a chop block pushed them back, followed by a 13-yard loss on Singleton’s fumbled snap, which Coastal recovered at their own 36 with 12 seconds remaining. Coastal's Nico Cavanillas Alti then successfully kicked a 58-yard field goal to end the half, giving Coastal a 24-14 lead.

Lewis’s four rushing touchdowns place him among notable App State backs, including Daetrich Harrington, who also achieved four rushing touchdowns in an FBS game in 2020. The program has seen two players rush for five touchdowns in a single game: Cam Peoples in 2020 and John Settle in 1986. Hasselbeck's 125 rushing yards against Coastal Carolina also rank among the highest for an App State quarterback in the FBS era, behind Taylor Lamb's 126 yards in 2016. The Mountaineers are set to return to action on Thursday for a nationally televised home game against James Madison.
