The Sun Belt Conference issued a joint statement from its commissioner and board president this past Monday, addressing conference realignment shortly after James Madison (JMU) announced its plans to leave the league for the American Conference. The announcement impacts the conference landscape, including local implications for Appalachian State, which is scheduled to host James Madison on Thursday, Oct. 22, for a sold-out, nationally televised Family Weekend game at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

According to published reports, James Madison's Board of Visitors voted to end its membership with the Sun Belt Conference. Subsequently, the American Conference accepted the school. James Madison is expected to join the American Conference no later than July 1, 2028. The Dukes have been members of the Sun Belt Conference since 2022.

Sun Belt Conference Commissioner Keith Gill commented on the league's recent performance and strategic direction in the wake of the realignment news. Commissioner Gill stated that since expanding to 14 football-playing members, the Sun Belt Conference has experienced its best four-year stretch in its 50-year history. During this period, the league has distinguished itself by leading all Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) non-autonomy conferences in football postseason representation for four consecutive years. The Sun Belt has also been a multi-bid conference in eight different sports, and it has earned more postseason berths in major team sports than any other FBS non-autonomy conference.

Commissioner Gill highlighted specific athletic achievements, noting that the conference has sent two teams to the Men’s College Cup, two teams to the Men’s College World Series, and one team to the College Football Playoff. Additionally, Sun Belt teams have competed in a pair of national championship finals. Gill emphasized that in an era of collegiate athletics marked by nationwide conference expansion, the Sun Belt has set itself apart through its consistent commitment to a defined geographic footprint and a divisional model. This approach, according to Gill, ensures regional rivalries, engages passionate fanbases, and supports its member institutions in their pursuit of excellence across all sports at a reasonable cost.

Regarding James Madison's recent announcement, Commissioner Gill stated that the conference leadership would now examine and evaluate all opportunities available. This ongoing work aims to ensure the sustained rise of the Sun Belt Conference, which Gill described as the premier FBS non-autonomy conference in the country. He concluded his statement by asserting, “The Sun Belt Conference is RISING, and our best days are ahead.”

Dr. Kyle Marrero, President of the Sun Belt Board of Directors, reinforced these sentiments. Dr. Marrero noted that through a tumultuous period in collegiate athletics, the Sun Belt has remained steadfast in its commitment to what he called the pillars of its success: regional rivalries, geographic alignment, and broad-based competitive excellence. These foundational principles, Dr. Marrero stated, have ushered in the most successful era in the conference’s history. He further explained that these pillars have guided the Sun Belt Board of Directors and the conference leadership, under the direction of Commissioner Gill, as they continuously evaluate opportunities to safeguard the Sun Belt and ensure its continued ascent.
