Appalachian State University is set to host rival James Madison University in a Thursday night football matchup at Kidd Brewer Stadium. The Mountaineers lead the all-time series against JMU 14-6 since 1980, holding an 8-3 record when playing at home.
The upcoming contest holds significant weight for the visiting Dukes. James Madison third-year safety KJ Flowe articulated the team's "number one rule" for the game: not to lose to the Mountaineers. Flowe emphasized the importance of collective effort, noting the game’s significance as the next one on the schedule. JMU head coach Billy Napier has characterized Kidd Brewer Stadium as one of the most challenging venues in the Sun Belt Conference. Napier suggested that players typically embrace such opportunities, recognizing them as the experiences they prepare for.
JMU faces a condensed preparation period for the Thursday night game, with only five days to get ready. In contrast, the Mountaineers, coming off a Friday-night contest, have an additional day of preparation. Coach Napier indicated that James Madison is drawing inspiration from NFL teams, particularly the Seattle Seahawks, to navigate these short-week scenarios. He noted that their plan for the week reflects lessons learned from how professional teams handle similar situations, confirming that the team is actively executing this strategy. Fourth-year edge Kei’Trone Simpson acknowledged the coaching staff's efforts to simplify preparation, stating that this week's plan is the "most detailed we’ve ever been," making it easier for players to approach it like a regular game.
From the Dukes' perspective, App State head coach Dowell Loggains' program has made substantial strides in his second year. Napier observed that the Mountaineers have shown improvement on defense and exhibit creativity on offense, possessing a range of effective weapons. The status of Appalachian State's starting quarterback, fourth-year Malachi Singleton, remains a key factor. Singleton sustained an ankle injury on October 10 during the Mountaineers' loss to Old Dominion. Although listed as a game-time decision last week against Coastal Carolina, he played the first half, contributing 151 total yards before taking a hit and not returning to the game.
In Singleton's absence against Coastal Carolina, third-year Henry Hasselbeck took over, completing 75% of his passes for 112 yards. Napier commented on Hasselbeck's development, noting that he has "gotten better each week and played well against Coastal." Napier further described Hasselbeck as athletic, praising the Mountaineers' coaching staff for effectively utilizing his rushing abilities. Singleton is listed as questionable on the injury report for the upcoming game. James Madison defensive coordinator Robert Bala stated that due to this uncertainty, their defense is preparing for either quarterback to play. Regardless of who starts under center for App State, Napier believes the Mountaineers possess a strong surrounding cast on offense. Bala reiterated that Coach Loggains excels at positioning his players for success.
This rivalry game is part of a series of three consecutive Thursday night matchups for James Madison, all broadcast nationally. Following this week's game, the Dukes are scheduled to face Troy and Southern Miss. The contest between James Madison and Appalachian State will be broadcast on ESPNU at 7 p.m. Napier acknowledged that the league has positioned JMU in the spotlight with this schedule, presenting a significant opportunity that influences the team's overall vision and objectives, especially given the competition they are facing.
