Appalachian State field hockey secured a 2-0 road victory against in-state foe Davidson College in a midweek matchup held in Mecklenburg County. The win marks the Mountaineers' third consecutive victory to open their 2026 campaign and their first win away from home this season.
The Mountaineers entered the contest having previously defeated Towson University and Georgetown University on their home turf. Davidson, for its part, had a split record in its opening games, facing the same opponents as App State; the Wildcats fell to both the Hoyas and the Tigers.
The first half of the game showcased a strong defensive effort from both squads, resulting in a scoreless draw. Davidson managed to outshoot the Black and Gold six shots to two during this period. App State's senior goalkeeper, Dakota Anderson, proved to be a critical factor, staying busy and making three crucial saves to keep the score level heading into halftime.
The defensive intensity continued into the third quarter, which also remained scoreless. Anderson again played a pivotal role for the Mountaineers, adding two more saves to her tally and ensuring the game was still knotted up as the teams prepared for the final quarter of play.
The long-standing deadlock was finally broken in the 47th minute of the game. Senior forward Brynn Shaffer found the back of the net for App State, scoring her first goal of the season and putting the Mountaineers ahead.
In a move to ignite their offense and equalize the score, Davidson made a strategic decision to pull their goalie in the 53rd minute, leaving their net undefended. App State capitalized on this aggressive play shortly thereafter. Freshman midfielder Chloe Hook "sealed the deal" for the Mountaineers with a goal in the 55th minute. This marked Hook's second goal of the season, extending App State's lead to 2-0.
The Mountaineers held firm against any last-minute attempts from the Wildcats, maintaining their two-goal advantage through the final five minutes of play to clinch the shutout victory.
Following this successful road trip, the App State field hockey team will travel to the District of Columbia for their next match. They are scheduled to face American University on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
